CPB Reflection for 4/1/20

It was very interesting and enlightening looking at other people’s common place book entries for this week. Looking at them has brought new perspectives of the novel and the appendices into light and has been very interesting to think of. The three common place book entries I looked at this week had different aspects and perspectives that they chose to highlight, but they all worked together to enhance my reading of the novel. Caitlyn chose to look at the perspective of the Egyptian’s and how the “magic” they practiced was part of their religion. Mariah looked the Egyptian religion through the viewpoint of the English and how they felt they were helping enlighten the Egyptians. Eve looked at the role of women in society during the time period and also brought current events of the time to help provide some explanation of the possible thought process of Richard Marsh when writing the novel.

What I found most interesting about Eve’s common place entry was her use of historical events. She included a comic depicting a murder by Jack the Ripper and explained that Richard Marsh may have been influenced by the events when writing the novel. This isn’t something that most people would think about or make the connection to so I found it very interesting to read about it. Caitlyn and Mariah both chose to include the image from the British Library of Holt encountering the being because it is such an important part of the novel. I also included that image in my entry because I feel it is central to the novel and where the mystery of the novel began.
