CPB Reflection for 4/15
For this week, I looked at Eve, Mariah and Caitlyn’s common place book entries. They all focused on different aspects of the novel, but one thing that I found in common between their entries was a depiction of the character of Dracula. What I found most interesting was the variety within the depictions. Mariah and Caitlyn depicted the character of Dracula as a handsome, attractive man who would be able to seduce any woman which agrees with the description and actions of Dracula within the novel. On the other hand, Eve depicted Dracula as being a startlingly pale, off putting individual who, in my opinion, would have a difficult time seducing any woman without the help of some other force besides appearance alone. I found Eve’s to be particularly unusual because in almost every novel, show, or movie written about vampires, they are depicted as being extremely attractive, almost to the point of not being human. I believe Eve’s picture was from a movie which would go against this general trend of Dracula depictions. I didn’t have a depiction of Dracula in my common place entry this week, but in previous weeks the images I came across were all images of a handsome Dracula who would be easily capable of seducing any victim, male or female.
Looking at the entries for this week, I was lead to a central question regarding the various depictions of Dracula. Eve’s image made me wonder why they chose to have the person playing Dracula appear monstrous in a sense instead of following the typical depiction. Overall, it made me wonder if the depiction of the character had anything to do with the underlying theme of monstrosity and if the author or director was choosing to make that theme more noticeable?
